Implementation, representation & presentation
The third part of your project consists of following a design direction for your project and implementing it.
This hand-in consists of three parts. 1) Decide on a direction for your project and articulate this. 2) Implement
variations of this that focus on representation and presentation. You may also use interaction, but this is not the
focus of this part of the project (but will be for the next part). 3) Describe your process, including how starting to
implement your design also might have caused you to revise your design ideas.
GENERAL DESIGN DIRECTION [300-800 WORDS]
You choose one sketch as your main design inspiration from the 10+10 work in the previous hand-in and articulate this design concept more fully. Consider drawing a more legible version of this using computer tools (e.g.,
InkScape, Adobe Illustrator, Data Illustrator, etc.).
CREATE THREE VARIATIONS [MAX 300 WORDS]
You implement your chosen design in code, using D3, Tableau, or other software as appropriate, and create
variations of your design. These variations can be steps along a design exploration, or variations in the same
step. This can be considered as the next step of doing 10+101
, but now in code. If you want to explore different
ideas from your sketching phase, that is allowed too. You describe what your variations explore (“general design
concept”) and each variation with up to 100 words, and provide links to running versions of your variations (we
suggest you use http://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~[YOUR CPSC ACCOUNT NAME]).
• You show the descriptions of the variations together with the visualization for example as html paragraphs (you may include the general concept description).
• You include screenshots of the alternatives and all descriptions in your report.
PROCESS OF IMPLEMENTING REPRESENTATION & PRESENTATION [250 WORDS]
You describe your process of coding the alternatives. Perhaps seeing the visualization with the full data set was
different than you imagined? Perhaps seeing the visualization more crisply than in your hand-drawn sketches
made you think twice about the design? Or perhaps the implementation itself made it possible to experiment in
new ways? Describe your thoughts about this part of your process.
SUMMARY
As outlined above, you summarise what you have done in writing based on the three headings and submit this
as a pdf hand-in.
You should use the following three headings to structure the text:
• General design direction
• Variations
• Process of implementing representation & presentation
SUBMISSION
You submit your hand-in as a pdf.
DEADLINE
Sunday March 21, 11:59pm Calgary time.
NEXT STEPS
You will receive formative feedback on your sketches and design direction in D2L from Zahra or Emma.
